AUDIOBOOKS PEBBLES

Earlier this month we covered ‘Gothenburg’, the virgin outing of London-based experimental duo Audiobooks. Their debut EP of the same title is now available across all streaming platforms and has been given an exclusive 12” hand-stamped vinyl release via indie heroes Heavenly Recordings. Stand-out track ‘Pebbles’ is a slow-burning piece of cinematic improvisation, which channels the likes of Björk and Kate Bush. The ominous synth work of well-loved producer David Wrench builds and drops in all the right places across the 5 and a half minute sonic exploration, as vocalist Evangeline Ling’s slowed-down stream of consciousness vocals tell a story of their own. In an interview with The Quietus Wrench explained, “‘Pebbles’ was a one-take improvisation with no edits, nothing before or afterwards. We had five minutes, we’d fucked around too much that day, listening to records and eating. We were going to a friend’s party and we were like, Shit, we haven’t done anything all day. We’ve got five minutes and then we have to get the bus. So we just hit record and that’s what came out, in its entirety. We didn’t really talk about what we were going to do." -Holly Mullineaux
